Most Headaches Are Not Due to Serious Neurological Problems

"Headache is a common problem," said Dr. Mohammad Wasay, Assistant Professor and Consultant Neurologist at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH). He was giving a presentation on "Headache: Harmful or Painful" at the monthly public health awareness programme, 'Signs, Symptoms and Care' on July 26, 2003.

"An estimated 30% people seek medical help for headache. Almost half of these patients have disabling headache. This leads to loss of work and revenue, which is estimated to be in billions. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of these chronic, disabling headache, could significantly improve quality of life," added Dr. Wasay.

Most of the headaches are not due to brain tumours or serious neurological condition. A careful neurological evaluation could exclude those conditions.

Dr. Wasay explained how to differentiate between just a painful headache and harmful headache. The clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of different headaches were elaborated.

A panel of consultants of AKU, which included Dr. Shahid Masud Baig, Dr. Saad Shafqat and Dr. Nadir Ali Syed participated in the question and answer session at the end of the programme.
