The first patient
treated at the new Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit at Aga Khan
University Hospital (AKUH) was recently discharged from the Hospital
after successful treatment lasting 26 days.
Amir
Wahid Mughal, 28, from Gujranwala had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's
disease six months after his marriage and was undergoing initial treatment
at a hospital in Lahore. He approached the
BMT Unit after seeing an announcement in a newspaper, and a diagnostic test
qualified him to undergo Autologous Bone Marrow Transplantation at AKUH. Describing
the transplantation as a success for the entire BMT team, Dr Irfan Vaziri,
Assistant Professor and Consultant Haematologist and Oncologist, and Dr Salman
Adil Assistant Professor and Consultant Haematologistcommended the professionalism
of BMT trained nurses as well as AKUH's state-of-the-art Laboratory and Blood
Bank Services.
Inaugurated
in April 2004, the BMT Unit at AKUH is specially designed for a select group
of oncology and haematology patients, offering services to patients suffering
from benign and malignant disorders such as aplastic anaemia, lymphoma, leukaemia
and thalassaemia. AKUH is one of the few teaching hospitals in the world to
be ISO 9001 certified, combining high-quality clinical service with compassionate,
ethical, accessible and individualistic patient care that meets the needs
and expectations of its patients.
"This
is just the first step. Amir has returned to Gujranwala and is living a normal life with
his family. He is still in contact with usand adhering to a follow-up regimen
at AKUH", said Dr. Vaziri.
