one estimate about half of the population above the age of
85 are affected with some form of dementia", stated Dr. Shahid

Dr. Baig
explained that by the next few decades the population of Pakistan
would almost double and the problem of care and treatment
of people with loss of memory would be an enormous burden
on the economy. "By one estimate the care of people with dementia
in USA costs 40 billion dollars each year and a country like
Pakistan with meagre resources cannot afford the burden of
that extent, therefore, there is a need to take preventive
measures," added Dr. Baig.
Dr. Baig
in his talk described the salient features of dementia, which
generally are in the form of progressive memory decline and
forgetfulness. The patient feels difficulty in coping with
routine tasks, and slowly the forgetfulness extends to the
point where the patient is unable to control urine and becomes
almost bedridden.
Dr. Baig
explained that the major causes of dementia are Alzheimer's
disease and stroke. He highlighted details of other treatable
diseases with features of dementia. He emphasised the need
for timely recognition of symptoms of dementia so that optimal
diagnosis and management strategy could be adopted.
The
speaker and the panelists that included Dr. Saad Shafqat,
Dr. Nadir Ali Syed, Dr. Mohammad Wasay and Dr. Imran Wahedna,
participated in the question-and-answer session at the end
of the programme.
