, which is operating 11 campuses
in six countries on three continents, is establishing a Faculty of Arts and Sciences
on a new 550 acre campus on the outskirts of
Karachi
. This was stated

during a meeting with Riaz Ahmed Tata,

Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry at Federation House
on
6 October 2003
. With
the launch of academic programmes outside
Pakistan
,
the University has established itself as an international institution. It now
has a permanent presence in some regions, such as
East Africa
,
and is focusing on intermediary capacity building in others, including
Bangladesh
,
Nepal
,
Afghanistan
and
Tajikistan
.
Kassim-Lakha informed that the University, which is operating a
Medical
College
,
School
of
Nursing
, Teaching Hospital and the
Institute for Educational Development, also recently established the Institute
for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in
London
.
Aga Khan University
President
said that the 500-bed University Teaching
Hospital is equipped to handle medical, surgical, obstetric and gynaecology, paediatric
and psychiatric patients. He said that the Hospital continues to expand its services
to meet the growing need for high quality comprehensive care. Kassim-Lakha
said that the
University
Hospital
,
as part of its overall policy to provide accessibility to all members of society,
also operates a Patient Welfare Programme, under which Rs.160 million was spent
in 2002 for needy patients. Additionally, he said that in 2001, a group of well
wishers started The Patient Behbud Society for
Aga Khan
University
Hospital
,
through which zakat contributions are collected for the treatment of poor patients.
