Aga Khan University organized its second Bilingual
Public Speaking Competition on February 21, 2001. This much-awaited competition
brings together institutions of higher learning in an attempt to promote
the art of public speaking among the youth. Teams from nineteen institutions
in Karachi, with speakers in English and Urdu competed for the trophy.
The AKU team participated in the competition as hosts and did not compete
for the trophy.
Judges included Mr. Jamil Yousuf, Chief of the CPLC,
Mr. Sultan Masood, Zonal Head of State Life Insurance Corp. of Pakistan,
and AKU faculty: Dr. Abul Faizi, Chairman, Department of Psychiatry and
Dr. Fauzia Shamim from AKU Institute for Educational Development.
The first prize for Urdu was awarded to Nasir Sohail
of the Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology and the second
prize was received by Uzma Ghani of the Bahria Institute of Management
and Computer Sciences. First and second prizes in the English-speaking
contest were awarded to Pamela Yousuf of the St. Joseph's Govt. College
for Women and Gohar Karim of the University of Karachi, respectively.
The Team Trophy was awarded to St. Joseph's Govt. College for Women and
the runner-up to the University of Karachi.
