Aga Khan University
Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) has agreed to work
as a national partner with Research Triangle Institute- Education
Sector Reform Assistance (RTI-ESRA) for building institutional capacity
of the selected districts of Sindh and Balochistan. These initiatives
are being funded by USAID.
An orientation programme
about AKU-IED's role in building the institutional capacity was arranged at
AKU-IED, Karimabad. The programme was attended by Dr. Noor-ul-Haq, Additional
Secretary (Academic), Department of Education and Literacy, Government of Sindh;
Dr. Mehboob Ali Sheikh, Director General Provincial Institute for Teacher Education;
Executive District Officers (Education); and District Officer (Education) of
District Thatta, Hyderabad, Khairpur, and Sukkur.
The representatives from
the four districts shared their planned initiatives for improving the quality
of elementary education. In his welcome address, Dr. Sadrudin Pardhan, Acting
Director AKU-IED welcomed the participants and apprised them about the role
of AKU-IED in quality improvement through research, professional development
programmes, and policy dialogues. Dr. Noor-ul-Haq, speaking on this occasion,
said it was right time for the provincial and district governments for improving
the quality of education in the country through AKU-IED's innovative professional
development programmes for teachers and educational officers. Fawad Shams, Teacher
Education-Component Leader-ESRA, shared the vision and initiatives taken by
ESRA. He said that these initiatives would help develop teachers and others
to become effective practitioners. He added that ESRA plans would support the
existing infrastructure including PITE for its capacity building.
Dr. Muhammad Memon, Head
of Programmes, AKU-IED, shared with the officers the Institute's plans and strategies
for institutional capacity building of the selected districts of Sindh and Balochistan.
