PhD Programme in Health Sciences
In October 1999, Aga Khan University (AKU) introduced a PhD programme in Health Sciences. This programme offers advanced courses and research in the basic medical sciences as well as in the cellular and molecular biology of cancer, infectious diseases, nutrition, cardiovascular disorders, metabolic diseases, neurosciences and molecular genetics.
Through the PhD programme, the University will train independent researchers, teachers and leaders and equip them with strong academic background through coursework, expose them to state-of-the-art experimental approaches through research work, develop analytical skills through writing a thesis, and develop leadership skills through role modelling in a conducive environment at AKU. The duration of this programme is approximately four years, each year having three terms of three-month duration. All compulsory coursework is scheduled during the first year, while the rest of the programme is for elective advanced courses, research and thesis writing.
