MSc Health Policy and Management

In October 2000, Aga Khan University (AKU) introduced a two-year MSc Health Policy and Management (HPM) programme. This programme is designed to train professionals in strategic and operational planning, policy analysis, institutional management and health systems research and development. MSc Health Policy and Management is a recognised degree by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. International accreditation is being sought from Council of Education for Public Health, a US-based accrediting agency for graduate programmes in public health.

Programme Objectives

  • To prepare leaders in health systems research, strategic planning, management and development;
  • To develop professionals with comprehensive skills in the health and social sector policy assessment, analysis and implementation, with conceptual and technical skills in institutional management;
  • To produce experts to function at all levels of social sectors, federal, provincial or local, public or private and in all settings such as academic schools, research institutes, advocacy groups, and service organisations like hospitals, clinics or primary health care centres.

Employment Opportunities
For Pakistan and the region, HPM is a pioneering programme. Rapid social transformation brought about by demographic and epidemiological transitions, the information and communications revolution and globalisation are having a great impact on the health and social sectors in Pakistan. Faced with challenges of structural adjustments and system reform, graduates of this programme are likely to be in great demand from academic and research institutions in various government departments (MoH, MoPW, P&D, National Commission for Human Development), research-based organisations (National Institute of Population Studies, Pakistan Medical Research Council), NGOs, Academia, public health sectors, para-statal organisations, health care institutions/hospitals and international organisations, donor agencies, bilateral agencies (UN, WB, ADB, DFID, etc) and the corporate sector (oil and pharmaceuticals companies).

Alumni
Since its inception, 26 students have graduated from this programme successfully and are working at national as well international assignments with government and non-governmental sectors. One student is enrolled in a doctoral programme at Johns Hopkins University, USA.
