Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Section at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) offers comprehensive tertiary eye care service. In addition to addressing routine eye problems in a university-based teaching hospital setting, it provides treatment for complex eye problems by consultant with sub-speciality interest.

The Section uses state-of-the-art technical facility for diagnostic testing and treating eye disease and vision problems. All eye consultant based at the Hospital are foreign qualified, having many years of clinical experience both overseas and nationally. Each consultant has developed expertise in his or her chosen areas. Services and specialities include anterior segment and state-of-the-art small incision suture less phaco cataract surgery often under topical (no needle) anaesthesia, Cornea including transplant; glaucoma; vitreo-retinal surgery; oculoplastic and orbit laser surgery; paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (squints) neurophthalmology; medical retina; contact lens and vision rehabilitation and electrophysiology.

The diagnostic services include fundus and slit-lamp photograph; fluorescein angiography; automated perimetry (Humphery HFA - 750); ultrasound A-scan and B-scan autorefraction laser surgery facilities include Nd Yag laser; solid-state argon laser; binocular indirect laser; and laser for cyclophotocoagulation.

The eye theatre is built with facilities to undertake all kinds of minor and major eye surgeries. Latest surgical equipment including Alcon universal II phaco machine; Storz posterior segment vitrector; Zeiss operating microscope with video camera attachment, is available.

As the eye service is an integral part of a multidisciplinary hospital, patient can get easy access for consultation with other specialities, e.g. neurologists, physicians, diabetologists or neurosurgeons for ensuring that the patient gets the best possible care. Outreach clinic facilities run by AKUH staff are at Aga Khan Health Services, Pakistan (AKHS, P) in Garden and Karimabad and at AKUH Clifton Medical Services.
