Neurosurgery

The practice of Neurosurgery is not only one of the best in the country but also among the best in the Middle East and South-East Asia . Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) is the only hospital in Pakistan where both the European-trained and the US-trained neurosurgeons provide care to the patients. Currently we have three full-time and three non-full-time neurosurgeons working with us. The ethics and experience of these neurosurgeons in combination with the strict quality control in AKUH and a solid infrastructure of hospital-based practice have brought neurosurgery to higher levels, comparable to any international standards. Neurosurgeons at AKUH work with several other services, particularly Neurology, to provide the best to the patients. Most of the Neurosurgery clinics run side by side with the Neurology clinics. Similarly, a very healthy and productive interaction exists with other services. These services include physiotherapy, rehabilitation, neuroradiology, neurophysiology and oncology. We always make an effort to provide a multi-disciplinary care for whatever problems our patients present with. We have acquired several of the state of the art technologies including the stereotactic computerised neuro-navigation system. An emphasis is being placed on minimally invasive surgery and microsurgical procedures. We are equipped to take excellent care of all neurosurgical problems. These include but are not limited to:

  • Neuro-oncology including tumors of brain and spine;
  • Cranial and spinal trauma;
  • Neurovascular diseases such as aneurysms, arteriovenous malformation, intracerebral hemorrhage;
  • Spinal problems including degenerative diseases and disc problems, spinal instrumentation and fixation;
  • Chronic back pain;
  • Pediatric neurosurgery;
  • Epilepsy surgery;
  • Skull base surgery;
  • Functional neurosurgery.

The academic activities of the section of Neurosurgery are again one of the best in the country and in this part of Asia. The neurosurgeons working at AKUH are well published and have deep interest in research and training. We offer a well-structured training programme that is monitored at several levels. Research, academics and training are other reasons that help maintain the high standards of Neurosurgery practice at AKUH.
