Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery provides comprehensive care in the areas of:

The surgical consultant works with a team of junior doctors and nurses to provide patient-focused care. Other healthcare personnel are involved as necessary. Anaesthetists also work closely with the surgical teams. The Department has developed various clinical pathways to facilitate efficient functioning and coordination between care stations. In addition, consultations from various specialities in other clinical disciplines: Radiology and Laboratory are often sought and are readily available.

Within each section, there are further sub-specialisation, for example, microvascular surgery minimally invasive procedures for which sophisticated technological support is available. While managing complex surgical problems with the help of intensive monitoring and organ support, the Department at the same time has made a major thrust towards developing day care surgery, which is highly cost-effective and convenient for patients. The Department has 124 inpatient, six ICU, 15 special care and 12 day surgery beds. Services include state-of-the-art equipment in the eight main operating rooms along with local, general and epidural anaesthesia services. For the convenience of patients, pre-anaesthesia evaluation, laboratory tests, financial and admission services are available to all elective patients at one station. Package prices are available for common surgical procedures. The Department is providing outreach ambulatory services at the Aga Khan Health Services Karimabad Day Care Centre and has future plans to expand the services to other areas of Karachi as soon as the required facilities are developed.
