2. Exercise Physiology

We have set a laboratory to investigate the effect of physical exercise and inspiratory muscle training on breathlessness. The exercise tests will be conducted on a cycle ergometer (Tunturi, Finland). Mixed expired air will be sampled by a carbon dioxide analyser and a paramagnetic oxygen analyser (Morgan, UK), giving VCO2 VO2 and RER. Inspired ventilation, respiratory frequency and tidal volume will be measured using a pneumotachograph (Gould, Holland). The heart rate, SaO2 (Pulse Oximeter, Ohmeda, USA) and ECG (Oscilloscope) will be monitored throughout the test. The data from the Oximeter, gas analysers and pneumotachograph will be processed using an IBM compatible computer.
