Obstetric Anaesthesia
Obstetric Anaesthesia refers to anaesthesia service and analgesia care provided to parturient during perinatal period, it also includes neonatal resuscitation and intensive care management of parturient. At tertiary care setups complex patients are cared for by interdisciplinary teams that include obstetricians, neonatologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, endocrinologists, anaesthesiologists and other consultants as needed.
In developed countries, obstetric anaesthesia is recognised as a subspecialty of anaesthesia with established fellowship and master’s programme. These programs aim at educating obstetric anaesthesiologist with the overall objectives of enhancing the quality of anesthetic care for obstetric patients, improving patient safety and satisfaction.
Currently in Pakistan except AKUH, there is no formal fellowship training programme in obstetric anesthesia with focus on clinical, educational, research and administrative aspects of Obstetric Anaesthesia.
