Vitreoretinal

The fellowship program is a well- preceptored, moderately high-volume retina practice with a nice mix of primary and referral vitreoretinal conditions. The fellowship is under Dr. Haroon Tayyab's guidance and vitreoretinal team comprising of Dr. Abdul Sami Memon, Dr. Rehman Siddiqui, and Dr. Pir Salim Mahar (Medical retina). This fellowship will also include exposure to retinal conditions in the pediatric population, including retinopathy of prematurity and retinal tumors, most notably retinoblastoma, where our pediatric ophthalmology team will ensure robust and clinically meaningful exposure.

This fellowship is designed to provide extensive training in the medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases. Teaching and training material for the fellowship will come primarily from the outpatient clinics of the main campus of The Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH), Karachi. Additional referrals will be catered from associated hospitals of AKUH (The Aga Khan Maternal and Child Care Center, Hyderabad, The Aga Khan Hospital for Women, Karimabad, Clifton Medical Center, The Aga Khan Hospital for Women, Garden East) as well as from hospital network of The Aga Khan Health Service Pakistan (AKHSP) including The Aga Khan Medical Center, Gilgit. The clinical experience will be well-balanced between the medical and surgical aspects of vitreoretinal diseases. As a major referral center for complex retina pathologies in Pakistan, the retina service at AKUH will provide an enriching and state of art learning experience for the fellow for an extensive mix of medical and surgical vitreoretinal problems. In addition, the fellowship will offer the learners contemporary and innovative aspects of teaching methodology. One such offering will be early fellowship surgical skill learning through the retina module of our state-of-the-art and world-standard EyeSi simulator.

Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at AKUH boasts one of the few retinopathies of Pakistan's few care service centers taking care of children with premature births requiring high-stake neonatal intensive care unit admissions. The vitreoretinal fellow will participate in the clinical and surgical care of patients with retinoblastoma and other retinal oncological problems. We at AKUH offer intra-arterial chemotherapy, a state of art care available in very few centers in Pakistan. The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at AKUH is the only center actively collaborating with fellowship training.
