Faculty member for its Secondary Education Unit.

The Aga Khan University's Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) based in London requires a Faculty member for its Secondary Education Unit. The incumbent will report to the Director of the Institute, with functional reporting to the Lead Faculty for Secondary Education Unit.

The Institute, through its Secondary Education Unit, wishes to contribute to effective teaching and learning about Muslim cultures. The Unit will provide an advisory service as well as hands-on support – within and outside the UK – to teacher education programmes concerned with the study of Muslim cultures. This will include collaborative design of teacher education curricula, pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) teaching and the development of assessment schemes. Members of the Unit will be expected to participate in and contribute to research on education about cultures and cultural issues. In line with the Institute's general educational perspective, the Unit will encourage the study of the cultures of Muslims through drawing upon the theories and methods of the humanities and social sciences.

Main Duties:

The following summarises the present requirements of the post, which will evolve over time. It is not exhaustive but is intended to outline the areas of work the incumbent will be expected to undertake:

  • Contribute to the design, development and delivery of curriculum, teaching content and related initiatives of the unit in collaboration with the relevant teacher education programmes
  • Review and update the curricular and related materials as appropriate
  • Participate in the research activities of the unit
  • Undertake other research project(s) in a field of specialisation consistent with the interests of the Secondary Education Unit of the Institute
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of project proposals with specific targets and timeframes; highlighting resource requirements, including academic, human, financial and other inputs
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the annual budget for the Unit and maintain accurate financial tracking of the programme
  • Maintain close liaison with other academic institutions to share and harness intellectual resources
  • Participate in planning, organising and leading (where appropriate) seminars, conferences and other initiatives related to the Unit's mandate
  • Participate and represent the Institute in external public events relevant to the objectives of the Secondary Education Unit, as required

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Should have a degree, preferably at doctoral level, with emphasis in the Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Candidates should have expertise and experience in pedagogy, curriculum development and teacher training programmes
  • Knowledge of language(s) of the Muslim world will be considered an asset
  • Background in Muslim Cultures will be an advantage
  • Strong organisational and planning skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team
  • Proficiency in MS Office software
