Student Affairs Officer

Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) in London is looking for a full-time Student Affairs Officer. The incumbent will be reporting to the Head of Educational Programmes (HEP) of the Institute. S/he will interact with a diverse student body and distinguished faculty at the Institute and from other academic institutions in the United Kingdom in an intellectually stimulating and supporting environment.

Salary will be in the range of £30,000 to £38,000 per annum. Upon the successful completion of probation, the employee will be entitled to Group Life Assurance at three times annual salary, Group Accident Insurance at four times annual salary and membership to Group Personal Pension Scheme. The Institute contributes an equivalent of 10 per cent of annual salary to the Scheme after the successful completion of probationary period.

Responsibilities
The following are the main responsibilities of the post. It is not exhaustive but is intended to outline the areas of work the incumbent will be expected to undertake:

  • Develop and enhance application forms and handbooks for educational programmes and financial assistance;
  • Assist with the processing of programme and financial assistance applications;
  • Assist students with all matters pertaining to their joining the Institute;
  • Develop and update the Student Handbook each year;
  • Maintain Student Information System;
  • Create and maintain student transcripts;
  • Process all course evaluation forms and develop course evaluation reports for each term;
  • Take responsibility for coordination of all formal examinations at the Institute;
  • Provide counselling to students as and when needed;
  • Develop student internship and placement plan and maintain a record of placements;
  • Identify placement opportunities, arrange events (where appropriate) and provide careers advice and guidance to students to facilitate their postgraduation experience;
  • Develop an annual proposal for extra-curricular activities and work with the HEP to develop annual co-curricular activities;
  • Support the HEP to complete appropriate financial and budgetary requirements;
  • Ensure adherence of all health and safety regulations and other policies and procedures of AKU-ISMC by students;
  • Provide reprographic support for Student Affairs activities as required.

Requirements

  • An honours degree as a minimum, preferably educated to Masters level;
  • Experience of working within a UK or international educational institution in a similar position;
  • Proven record of excellent administrative and organisational skills;
  • Experience of academic record keeping and management;
  • Experience of Residence Life Programme management;
  • Familiarity with student counselling procedures and resources;
  • Excellent proficiency in written and oral English;
  • The ability to deal sensitively and empathetically with people from a wide range of cultures;
  • A high level of proficiency in computer, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • UK/EU citizen or appropriate permission to work in the UK.
