Faculty Position – Law in Muslim Contexts
Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC), based in London, requires full-time faculty in the field of Law within the Contexts of Muslims. The goal of the Institute is to strengthen research and teaching on the heritage of Muslim societies in all their historic diversity and deepen the understanding of pressing issues affecting these societies. The Institute offers an MA in Muslim Cultures with the aim of contributing to the formation of scholars, intellectuals and professionals capable of engaging with contemporary challenges, particularly those faced by Muslims. It draws upon ethical ideals, critical thinking and modern academic tools. The MA offers a distinctive way of understanding the cultures of Muslims as they have evolved over time using the theories and methods of the humanities and social sciences as a framework for study.
Requirements
Candidates should display a sound theoretical understanding in their area(s) of specialisation and a solid track record of publications. Experience in teaching theory and research methodology courses in the relevant areas will be required. Interest and experience should include work in applied settings. A demonstrated desire to articulate and/or bridge disciplinary boundaries will be considered an asset.
Candidate should have:
- A completed PhD in the field of Law with particular focus on Legal Studies in Muslim contexts;
- Considerable knowledge of and contribution to contemporary debates about Muslim Legal Traditions and their interaction with religion and society;
- Theoretical and/or empirical work on issues pertaining to the relationships of Muslim Traditions to the theory and practice of democracy, human rights and civil society.
