Systems Librarian

Aga Khan University (AKU) is an international university with campuses in Pakistan and East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda), and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations in the UK. AKU also offers medical and nursing training programmes in several countries (Afghanistan, Egypt and Syria). AKU's development projects include the creation of a new Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) in Nairobi, Kenya and a considerable expansion of its medical campus in Karachi.

Aga Khan University, Karachi invites applications for the position of Systems Librarian.

Responsibilities
The Systems Librarian will be responsible for the planning and management of AKU’s library and learning resources technology and systems. S/he will develop these systems as tools to support AKU’s teaching and research missions, oversee the implementation and management of new library and information management systems that will eventually cover and integrate all AKU campuses and institutions and provide a leadership role in developing solutions to facilitate access to information resources throughout the multiple sites.

Requirements
Candidates should have:

  • A Masters Degree in Library/Information Sciences from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent;
  • At least five years of experience as a Systems Librarian or an equivalent position implementing and managing complex library and information management systems preferably in a higher education or research environment;
  • Knowledge and experience of state of the art, web-based information management technologies (i.e. Z39.50 protocol, XML, web authoring tools, Perl, PHP, Java, SQL, etc), international bibliographic standards and formats and their applications in web-based technologies;
  • Experience in implementing and managing complex, decentralised networked library management systems, managing web-based e-learning technologies and UNIX-based operating systems and in developing and implementing staff training programmes.
