Citizenship Education in UK Schools: Looking Forward
Citizenship education refers to the use of education for training pupils to become citizens. Since it became part of the UK national curriculum in 2002, its content, pedagogy and impact has attracted substantial debate. On October 17, 2006, the Nuffield Foundation brought together teachers, advisors and leading figures working within the area of citizenship education to discuss issues concerning the future development of this subject. The seminar, Citizenship: Looking Forward, sought to address a range of issues including strategies for more effectively embedding citizenship within schools and colleges in Britain. Farid Panjwani, faculty member of AKU-ISMC contributed to this seminar through a lead presentation exploring the implications of the internal diversity of religions for citizenship education.
