Youths Visit Development Projects of the AKDN
May 22, 2007
The Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) welcomed a group of 30 young people from Canada and the United States as part of an awareness trip organised in collaboration with the Aga Khan University.
The purpose of the trip is to raise awareness about the work of the University and other Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) institutions and involves visits to London, UK and Karachi, Gilgit and Chitral in Pakistan.
During their day at AKU-ISMC, the students and young professionals were introduced to the Institute’s research activities and educational programmes, with a view to sharing the programmes’ unique way of understanding the cultures of Muslims as they have evolved over time.
The group participated in a lecture presented by faculty member, Farid Panjwani, on the topic of privilege and responsibility and the reasons for development. The discussion that followed raised critical questions about the purpose and history of development, the impact of culture on development and the way in which the participants themselves might engage with development work.
Following a lunch with faculty and staff, the group had an opportunity to learn more about the Institute’s library and have a tour of the premises.
