AKU-ISMC MA Students Visit York and Cardiff

During February, AKU-ISMC MA students had the opportunity to explore parts of the UK including Cardiff, Wales and York, Northern England. Co-curricular activities are in integral part of the MA in Muslim Cultures, allowing students to explore a variety of cultural and historical sites throughout the United Kingdom.
From February 16th to 17th, the MA students participated in a trip to Cardiff. While in Cardiff, the students explored the various sites of the Welsh capital, including Cardiff Castle, the National Museum and Cardiff Bay, among other sites. On the return journey, students had the opportunity to explore the Neolithic monuments at Stonehenge as well as the cathedral at Salisbury.
First year student Fayaz Noormohamed commented on the students' trip to Cardiff, expressing the value of co-curricular activities in enhancing the social life of students at the Institute.

"Trips like this do so much to help our sense of community grow. By placing ourselves outside the academic environment of the Institute, we are able to become better friends and come to the point where we can really help and support each other not just in our studies, but in life."
During the weekend of the 23rd and 24th of February, the students went to the historical city of York. During their stay, students were given an extensive guided tour of the city. During their stay in York, the students were able to explore Yorkminster, the old city walls, the city's medieval streets and the railway museum. In the evening, the students joined a 'Ghost Walk' around the streets of York.
Co-curricular excursions are a vital part of the MA programme, and allow students to explore the rich culture and history of the United Kingdom and Europe, while providing students with the chance to enhance their relationships with fellow students and faculty. In 2007, the students went on excursions to Cambridge, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
