The Programme
Held at Simon Fraser University, Canada, this International Summer Program on Muslim Cultures aims to provide a window into the diversity of the cultural and social productions of Muslims, past and present. Major international scholars will be brought together on the campus of Simon Fraser University to provide instructional modules addressing various facets of the history, culture, and contemporary challenges of Muslims. In this stimulating environment, participants will be equipped with the resources and skills to understand the diverse heritage, evolving experiences, contributions to world history, and contemporary relevance of Muslim peoples.
Approach
The Programme will be co-sponsored by the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (Simon Fraser University) and the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (the Aga Khan University). Both institutions are ideally situated to provide a critical-historical understanding of Muslims within larger frameworks that recognize the importance of interdisciplinary and comparative approaches, without reducing understanding to issues solely related to religion. At a time when rigorous and unbiased information concerning Muslims is at a premium, the Summer Programme offers an opportunity for nonspecialists to obtain timely knowledge, practical skills, and critical perspective. It is designed to provide information and analysis for the larger public, including educational and legal professionals, and members of NGOs, business, governmental, and other decision-making institutions.
Programme Details
The non-credit summer term will consist of small groups (25-30 participants) in three-hour modules (morning and afternoon) from Monday July 21 to Friday August 1, 2008, 9:30 to 16:30.
