Law in Muslim Contexts
This course will be held on 28 and 29 March 2009 at the Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, 4 - 5 Bedford Square, London, WC1B 3RA.

Course description
The overall aim of the course is to help in the understanding of contemporary issues impacting Muslim societies (including the debates on the relevance of shari‘a today and the reforms of personal law) and to place these issues into a context informed by history as well as current social and political developments.

Course objectives
To this end, the course seeks to achieve the following objectives:
- To introduce the audience to the formation of Muslim law before the emergence of the legal schools.
- To examine the diversity of Muslim legal approaches with reference to the development of both Sunni and Shi’i schools of law.
- To review the discussion in Muslim contexts on faith and society, taking account of issues of gender, human rights, development concerns and politicisation within various communities.
- To discuss the debates on the relevance of shari‘a today.
- To acquaint the audience with issues related to contemporary changes in the personal law of selected Muslim societies

Who should attend?
AKU-ISMC is non-denominational and welcomes participants of all backgrounds. This course would be especially beneficial for:
- Lawyers or those working fields related to law
- Others with an academic interest in the development of Islamic legal traditions
- Journalists, diplomats, civil society and NGO personnel, and other professionals

Course fees
Early Bird Rate
Applications received by 15 February 2009 will be eligible for an 'early bird rate' course fee of £175. Please note that payment must be made at time of application in order to benefit from this reduced rate.
Course fees are:
- Standard course fee: £200
- Concessionary fee: £100 (limited places available)
The deadline for applications is 23 March 2009. Please apply early to secure your place on the course as spaces are limited.
Please note that full payment is required before your enrolment can be confirmed.
The concessionary fee is available to:
- Full-time students;
- Pensioners whose sole source of income is a Department for Work and Pensions state retirement pension; and
- Those receiving income support
Please note that limited concessionary fee-paying places are available.
