AKU-ISMC welcomes new MA students

AKU-ISMC is delighted to welcome its new students to the 2008-2009 MA in Muslim Cultures. The students joining the Institute come from a variety of countries and backgrounds - including Canada, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan and the USA. The new group of students join the 2006 cohort to form a total of 22 students at the Institute.
As a preparatory component to the Programme, several students participated in an academic English course at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).
Orientation week, which ran from the 24th of September to the 28th of September, saw the students involved in a number of activities, including a play at the Globe Theatre, a London sightseeing tour, visits to the Institute for Ismaili Studies and SOAS libraries, a concert by the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Festival Hall and a day-trip to Canterbury.

In addition to these cultural activities, the students also participated in a number of introductory academic lectures. At their official welcome, the Head of Academic Programmes, Dr Moncef Ben Abdeljelil expressed his desire that the Programme contribute towards the self-development and growth of each student, and that it assist the students explore the body of Muslim heritages in order to help address contemporary concerns.
Dr Ben Abdeljelil highlighted the strength of the Programme in being able to attract such a diverse student body; the varied approaches and attitudes of each student, their different languages and cultures, and their own individual skills and strengths are a considerable asset that will contribute, in and of itself, to the richness of the learning experience in the Programme.

One of the students, Larisa Gvasaliya, expressed her views on AKU-ISMC so far, saying that, "it has been really great although somewhat challenging. But challenges just make us stronger!"
AKU-ISMC's MA in Muslim Cultures provides a multidisciplinary approach the study of Muslim heritages and cultures. Through the humanities and social sciences, the programme attempts to address contemporary concerns from an historical perspective.
