IIS Students visit AKU-ISMC

Students of the IIS STEP Programme at AKU-ISMC

On the 11th of September, a group of 30 students from the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) visited Aga Khan University - Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC) to learn more about the work of the University and the vision and mission of the Institute.

The students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, are participants in the IIS Secondary Teacher Education Programme, a religious education training programme taught in collaboration with the University of London 's Institute of Education.

The students were given an overview of AKU-ISMC by the Director, Dr Abdou Filali Ansary, who explained that the Institute occupies a unique and significant place in scholarship about Muslim cultures. Dr Filali Ansary shared the Institute's aspirations to be at the forefront of research in education, exploring and recognizing the rich heritages of Muslims in order to produce a new vision of education about Muslim civilisations.

Following the introduction to the Institute, the Head of Educational Programmes, Dr Moncef Ben Abdeljelil, provided an overview of the AKU-ISMC MA in Muslim Cultures. The MA in Muslim Cultures offers a distinctive way of understanding the cultures of Muslims using the tools of the social sciences and humanities. The two-year MA stresses the plurality and complexity of past and present Muslim cultures and examines them as part of a framework of world cultures.

The students were also given an overview of other activities at the Institute by faculty members Dr Sarah Savant and Farid Panjwani. This included information about a seminar series on pluralism, which has attracted eminent Professors Ronald Dworkin and Anthony Grayling, cultural events and an international conference on higher education in developing countries. The visitors were then given a tour of the Institute's premises, including the Library.

Interaction between AKU-ISMC and other academic institutions, such as the IIS, aims to further the academic discourse about Muslim cultures and contexts and serves as an opportunity to build mutually beneficial linkages and partnerships, both in the United Kingdom and internationally.
