On the 6th of February 2008, AKU-ISMC held a film screening for its MA students. The students watched the Palestinian film Paradise Now which won the 2005 Golden Globe Best Foreign Language Film award. The first Palestinian film to be nominated for an Academy Award, Paradise Now explores the actions of two close friends, recruited by an extremist group to perpetrate a terrorist attack in Tel-Aviv.
The movie focuses on the perspectives of the two friends, and the people who accompany them during their final day. When they cross the fence to get into Israel, they are split up due to an Israeli patrol. While back on the Palestinian side of the fence, they continue to search for each other, with each contemplating their situation and mission in their own way.
After watching the film, the students engaged in a discussion, looking at the cultural and historical themes that were raised and exploring the film's relevance to the study of contemporary Muslim cultures. AKU-ISMC's cultural events encourage students to explore and question a wide range of topics and issues through film, literature and art.
