AKU-ISMC holds Film Screening as part of Cultural Events Series
10 October 2007
On the 10th of October, AKU-ISMC held a film screening for its MA students as part of its cultural events series started in 2006.
The students watched the Turkish/German film Head-On: Till Death Do us Part which won the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival Golden Berlin Bear award.
The film explores the themes of family pressures, assimilation, integration, loneliness and despair through the lives of second generation Turkish families living in Germany. The story focuses on the relationship between a middle-aged Turkish man and a young Turkish woman who meet in a psychiatric facility in Germany after both have attempted suicide.
After watching the film, the students engaged in a discussion, looking at the cultural and social themes that were raised and exploring the film’s relevance to the study of contemporary Muslim cultures.
AKU-ISMC’s cultural events explore the diversity of Muslim cultures through film, literature and art.
