Lecture: Citizenship and Democracy: One or Two Concepts?

Lunchtime Lecture Series Autumn 2008. Speaker: Professor Etienne Balibar. Professor Balibar is Distinguished Professor in the School of Humanities, University of California at Irvine, and Fellow of the Birkbeck Institute of Humanities. His early works were on Marx’s Capital, then on Spinoza. Subsequently his interests have been animated by many different themes: of identity and difference, race and European identity, violence and the problem of civility, justice and equality, and, recently, the idea of war as politics and politics as war. Among his many books, an especially relevant work is We, The People of Europe?: Reflections on Transnational Citizenship (Princeton, 2003), in which he investigates the conditions for a democratic Europe. |

Lecture: Muscat & Oman 1962-1964 David Gwynne-James
You are invited to an illustrated talk by David Gwynne-James on Muscat & Oman 1962-1964 Sultan's Armed Forces. In the early 1960s, Sultan Said bin Taimur asked the British government to loan fifty British Officers to lead and train his army to defend his country from external aggression and calm internal unrest. David Gwynne-James served on secondment to the Sultan of Muscat's Armed Forces between 1962 and 1964 and has recently written three books, Letters from Oman (2001); For King and Country (2006); Arabian Peninsula 1958 (2008). His talk is a snapshot of a poor, divided and feudal country with no infrastructure awakening to the prospect of oil. |

Lecture: The Prospect of Democratisation in Afghanistan
Speaker: Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta is Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan, a position he has held since May 2006. Foreign Minister Spanta earned a Master degree in Political Sciences, Sociology and International Relations and a PhD degree from Aachen University in Political Sciences where he also taught as a professor from 1992 to 2005. In January 2005, Dr. Spanta returned to teach at Kabul University, and later became the advisor on foreign affairs to President Hamed Karzai. His nomination as Foreign Minister was approved by the Parliament on April 20, and he was sworn in on May 2, 2006. |

This documentary-style performance takes us deep into the motivations of the human mind. Based on the chilling, true stories of two Iranian murderers, A Journey North resembles a cool, detached police investigation. Beneath television screens projecting their own faces, four actors sit back to back and address the audience from their own isolated spaces, offering interwoven accounts from the two murderers and two relatives of the victims. |
