Certificate Course for Educators

Teaching

The following principles inform the way the course is taught:

  • A process of dialogue involves teachers and learners in a community of enquirers;
  • Enquiry methods encourage critical thinking and independent learning;
  • Multiple viewpoints and interpretations helps participants understand the value of personal engagement and subjectivity in the pursuit of knowledge;
  • lifelong learning through the teaching methodologies, assignments and field work is encouraged;
  • Sensitivity to field realities and encouragement to apply learning in participants’ particular contexts;
  • Critical reading of texts and social practices with reference to their contexts; and,
  • Integration of learning with teaching as a way of modelling for other teachers.

Assessment

Assessment is based on assessment for learning.  The following helps provide feedback:

  • Student-led seminars;
  • Article/textbook reviews;
  • Lesson planning, classroom teaching and reflective pieces;
  • Project work.

All participants are assigned a personal tutor throughout the course.  Tutors provide academic guidance and feedback.  We also recommend that participants keep a journal/diary during the course to record their reflections, thoughts and challenges. Diaries are private and are not assessed.
