On the 23rd of October, AKU-ISMC hosted a visit by the Founder and Chairperson of the Arab International Women's forum, Haifa Al Kaylani. Al Kayani is well known in government and business circles for her role in drawing attention to cultural and gender issues.
During her introductory visit to AKU-ISMC, Al Kaylani spoke of her keen interest in the work of the Institute, particularly its distinctive MA in Muslim Cultures. Director of the Institute, Dr Abdou Filali Ansary, spoke of the Insitute's role as a positive exemplar for education about Muslim cultures, and identified areas of possible collaboration with Al Kaylani.
Al Kayani, a former economist and graduate of the American University of Beirut and University of Oxford, has been a key proponent of the promotion of understanding between Arab and International communities and supporting the role of women within this. Quoted in a recent Financial Times article, Al Kayani spoke of the importance of the role of women in the Arab world, stating that, "Governments must put policy into action now. It is essential that women be integrated into the mainstream - taking advantage of education and skills training, accessing micro-credit or venture capital, and developing their full economic potential."
During the meeting, the possibility of Al Kaylani leading a guest lecture about her work in the international community and her role in promoting cross-cultural understanding was discussed. Through interaction and collaboration with well known international leaders, the Institute hopes to be able to identify areas in which collaboration is possible, and to invite them to share their ideas and engage in discussion on a variety of issues.
