On the 11th of March, the Aga Khan University (AKU) celebrated the first of numerous events that will commemorate its 25th Anniversary. Held at the Ismaili Centre, London, the event was celebrated by AKU staff, faculty, alumni, students and guests of the University.

AKU was founded in 1983 by His Highness the Aga Khan and, over the past 25 years, has grown to provide quality education and services in eight countries - Afghanistan, Kenya, Pakistan, Tanzania, Uganda, Syria, Egypt and the United Kingdom. The University currently has over 3500 students studying in its programmes around the world.

In his address, AKU President Firoz Rasul expressed the positive change that the University has brought about in the various countries that it works in, especially in the fields of education and health. President Rasul also noted that the University was working toward a deeper level of understanding and quality multidisciplinary research about Muslim cultures through its Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC), based in London.

Looking forward to the next 25 years, President Rasul expressed his enthusiasm for the exciting challenges that lay ahead. Most recently, His Highness the Aga Khan announced the development of two new faculties in East Africa – a Faculty of Arts and Sciences in Arusha, Tanzania and a Faculty of Health Sciences in Nairobi, Kenya.

AKU-ISMC Director Abdou Filali-Ansary in his welcome address noted that an important element of AKU was its sense of community and supports, which allowed for a space that nurtures academic excellence. AKU-ISMC was founded in 2004 to strengthen research and teaching on the heritage of Muslim societies as they have evolved over time, and on the challenges these societies face in today's globalised world. Currently, there are 22 students completing their MA in Muslim Cultures at the Institute.

The 25th Anniversary of AKU coincides with the Golden Jubilee of His Highness the Aga Khan, Chancellor of the University. Over the course of the year a number of events are being held internationally to commemorate both the founding of the University and the Golden Jubilee of the Chancellor.
