Torkis Lubis
 Dr Torkis Lubis is a research fellow at AKU-ISMC. His fields of research are Arabic language and Islamic thought (Al-Quran. Tafsiruh wa tarjamatuh ) [The Quran: Interpretation and Translation]. He is also interested in Islamic thought in contemporary Indonesia, as well as Islamic tolerance (Al-Islam wa al-tasamuh) and Islam and Pluralism (Islam wa ta’addudiyah). His research project at AKU-ISMC is entitled ‘The debate between the Indonesian Muslim Scholars Council (MUI) and the Contemporary Liberal Islam Network in Indonesia’. His project seeks to analyse the key issues of debates between the two groups. Through this analysis Lubis hopes to reconstruct, through an interpretive approach, the complex socio-political and economic context in Indonesia today. Previously, Lubis taught at the State Islamic University of Malang, Indonesia, where in 2003, he was appointed the Head of the Arabic Teaching Department. He received his PhD in Arabic Language and Literature from Mohamed V University, Rabat, Morocco. He has participated in a range of international conferences, including Al-Quran. Tafsiruh wa tarjamatuh [The Quran: Interpretation and Translation] in Bandung. In addition to this, he has participated in seminars on Islamic thought in contemporary Indonesia, such as Al-Islam wa al-tasamuh [Seminar on Islamic Tolerance] and Islam wa ta’addudiyah [Islam and Pluralism].
