Habiba Fathi
 Dr Habiba Fathi is a research fellow at AKU-ISMC. Her research project, Islam, State and the Transformation of the Rural Space in post-Soviet Central Asia: a Study of the Family Through its Exchange Strategies, aims to study the new relations developing between the independent State and Islam from the angle of social change, starting from family structures in the rural areas of post-Soviet Central Asia. Her major field of research focuses on the expressions of religion in everyday Islam among Muslim societies of post-Soviet Central Asia. Other research interests include the role of women in the trans-generational transmission of religious knowledge and in the (re)discovery of the Central Asian Islamic heritage, with a particular emphasis on the question of old and new Islamic educational systems in the context of nation-building. She has conducted socio-anthropological field research in various parts of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, as well as South Kazakhstan. Fathi obtained her PhD in human and social sciences at INALCO (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales) in July 2001 after which she joined the CERI (Centre d’études et de recherches internationales) in Paris from 2002 to 2003. From 2003 to 2007 she was a post-doctoral researcher at the French Institute for Central Asian Studies (IFEAC) based in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and affiliated with the French Foreign Ministry. She is a member of the Editorial board of a new review of Cosmopolitics called Cosmopolis (http://agora.qc.ca/cosmopolis). She is also a member of the European College of Experts in Public Administration.
