Research Projects

Global learners and mobile learning. A series of research projects which explore ways in which mobile learning might engage 21st century global learners. The focus of this research is on the use of podcasting (the process of distributing audio and/or video broadcasts over the Internet for downloading and viewing or listening to on a digital media player) in higher education. Catherine has received a Curriculum Innovation Award in this area.

Academic practice and the rationalities of governance in higher education. Through documentary analysis and interviews, this research explores the relationships between governance and academic practice in higher education. The research engages with the debates concerning changes and new directions in global higher education.

Values in higher education. Through interviews and questionnaires, this project explores values in higher education and the question of whether there are specifically Muslim values in respect to higher education.

Culture and change. A collaborative research project (with Robert Bideleux) which investigates the dynamics of cultural encounters across time, space, place, generation and gender. This research draws on examples from music, painting, literature and cinema to investigate the ways in which cultures have been produced, disseminated, appropriated, contested, transformed and interlaced. A book project is underway, tentatively entitled: Oriental Europe: the interlacing and reshaping of Europe and its ‘others’.
