Senior Instructor Arif Jamal, AKU-ISMCArif Jamal, Senior Instructor obtained his BA from McGill University before completing his LLB at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law after which he was called to the Bar of British Columbia. In 1994 he joined the Institute of Ismaili Studies’ (IIS) graduate programme in Islamic Studies and Humanities, which he completed by reading for an LLM degree, with a focus on Islamic Studies and the Humanities at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). He later joined the IIS as research associate and after that worked as unit coordinator in the Director’s office.

From 2003 to 2004 he was a visiting researcher with the Islamic Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School. He has also been a tutor in law at University College London (UCL) and the School of Law at SOAS. His publications have appeared in the Yearbook of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law and he has a chapter appearing in a forthcoming book on Muslims and the crisis of secularism. Currently Arif is undertaking doctoral work on the relationship between religion, the state and the public sphere in Muslim contexts in the Faculty of Laws at UCL.
