Policy and Procedure for Resolving Authorship and Ownership of Intellectual Property

Currently at Aga Khan University (AKU) we have authorship guidelines available on the intranet at http://akuied/ied/raps/Policies/genpolicy.shtml and a draft policy on Intellectual Property Rights. These documents serve faculty and academic staff in making judgments about authorship/ownership of intellectual work, and resolve any issues arising. However, there are instances when issues or grievances arise, which it is not possible for the persons involved to resolve. For such cases, RAPSAC has recommended the following policy and procedure:

  • In case of a grievance regarding ownership and/or authorship of intellectual work, the aggrieved party would make an application to the head RAPs ;

  • A grievance committee would be set up by the Director in consultation with the Head, RAPS; it would be independent of RAPSAC;

  • The committee would report directly to the Director, AKU-IED;

  • The proposed committee would have representation from different ranks and gender;

  • No member in the committee would have any kind of affiliation with the case being submitted to the committee;
