Cooperating Schools

The following categories of schools are considered as `cooperating schools' of Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED):

• Aga Khan Educational Services (AKES) schools within Pakistan and overseas;
  
• Selected government schools in Pakistan, East Africa and Central Asia;
  
• A selected number of non-profit private schools.

AKES schools within Pakistan and overseas

AKES schools within Pakistan and other developing countries were an obvious group to be included. The fact that AKES schools had the resources, organizational structures, prior experience and the political will to engage in school improvement programmes made them potentially most receptive to AKU-IED initiatives.

Selected government schools

Government schools were selected because including teachers from the public sector was both necessary and desirable. The stated interests of the donor agencies and the governments of Pakistan, East Africa and Central Asia were served by including the government schools in the programme. The stated interests of AKDN in influencing education in government schools were also served.

A selected number of non-profit private schools

It was also considered important to include private schools in this programme for several reasons. First, private schools are often perceived to be providers of quality education available locally. The human and financial resources already available to them could help to make the impact of AKU-IED interventions quite visible in a short span of time. Secondly, teachers from these schools are more likely to be selected as part-time AKU-IED faculty because their backgrounds tend to have provided them with greater facility in English, and relatively richer school, college and teaching experiences.
