Services
Inquiries and Advisory Service
Staff are available for advice on all aspects of library use. They
answer general and specific questions on all educational topics
and related subjects and provide help to students in literature
search from resources available in print and other media.
Orientation Programme
In order to acquaint students with the library's services, procedures
and resources, an orientation programme is conducted at the beginning
of each course. Students are informed of the library's resources
and how they can effectively use these resources. Students are also
taught about the use of online
catalogue, including hands-on practice on how to search
the catalogue. They are also acquainted with the library's rules
and regulations. Presentations for literature search
on the Internet and CD-ROM are also arranged and specific questions
answered.
Demonstrations on accessing electronic resources on multimedia
are arranged from time to time for MEd students in the computer
lab. Also, individual sessions are held in the library for all library
users.
New Arrivals and Contents Alert Service
Lists of new books and tables of contents of new journals received
in the library are scanned and electronically shared on Intranet
with all faculty, researchers and Professional Development Teachers
(PDTs) as a weekly feature.
Inter-Library Loan Service
This service is extended to a member if a required book or material
is not available in this library. Books can be borrowed through
inter-library loan from the AKU main library and the Teachers Resource
Centre.
Photocopy Service
Library materials can be borrowed for photocopying. Photocopy
service is available in the Reprographic Rooms on the first and
second floors on a payment basis. However, a whole book is not allowed
to be photocopied, as per copyright regulations.
Photocopy of a Journal's article can be acquired from Oxford University
and the British Library on request. However, the library will charge
for this service.
Outreach Activities
AKU-IED Library and SHADE (School Heads Association) are working
together with cooperating schools to help school librarians in developing
school libraries and enhancing children's reading habits. The library
also organizes workshops and Summer Internship programmes for librarians
of cooperating schools.
The library caters to the needs of the Open Learning students and
also those students registered in the PhD and MPhil courses at AKU-IED's
partner universities. There is also an institutional membership
facility with Teachers Resource Centre.
AKU-IED Library also provides professional guidance to the libraries
of Professional Development Centres in Pakistan (Northern Areas
and Chitral) and East Africa. It facilitates the selection and purchases
of books, journal subscriptions, and the overall development of
their libraries.
