Library Collection
Library collection refers to books,
journals, reference
works and non-print materials in the library. Most of the collection
items are available for circulation, that is, authorized library
members may borrow these items for a specified period (see Lending
Schedule). A few items in the collection may only be used in
the library, that is, they are not available for circulation. This
is to ensure that the limited number of items in the Reference section
will be available to as many users as possible.
Books
Books are available for circulation to all registered library members
for a period specified in the lending
schedule.
The online
catalogue, which lists all items available in the library,
can be searched by author, title, subject, or call number of the
book. There is no keyword search option. The catalogue can be viewed
on AKU-IED Intranet.
Reference Works
This section contains standard tools
for ready reference such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, handbooks,
yearbooks, and directories of education. Activity files in subject
areas such as Science, English, and Mathematics are also available
in this section. Some material are only available for use in the
library and are not available for circulation.
Journals
The library subscribes to 130 professional and scholarly journals
from all over the world on Education, Science, Mathematics, English
and Social Studies teaching. The most recent issues of journals
are placed on the current journal display shelves and back issues
for that year are placed under the current journals. Bound volumes
of back issues are housed separately. The contents pages of all
subscribed journals are indexed and available on the online
catalogue. Current journals' contents pages can be viewed
on Intranet (http://akuied/).
Reports
The library stocks reports from the Education Ministry of Pakistan,
UNESCO, UNICEF, the Bernard Van Leer Foundation, the World Bank,
as well as MEd and PhD dissertations. These dissertations are housed
separately and arranged by their reference number. Reports and dissertations
are for reference only and cannot be borrowed (list available on
the online
catalogue).
Non-Print Collection
This section includes over 400 audio and video cassettes covering
various aspects of teaching and learning, as well as a collection
of educational CDs. Videos shot in-house by the Media Studio are
also available. Items in this section can be issued on production
of a Library Membership Card. The list of items in this section
is available on the online
catalogue.
Newspaper Clippings
Files containing newspaper clippings of articles on educational
topics from the national daily newspapers of Pakistan are arranged
by reference number and date. These are available for reference
and photocopying, and are searchable on the online
catalogue.
Newsletters
Newsletters, chronicles, brochures and university prospectuses
received by the library are displayed in the general magazines section.
The library is on the mailing list of several international associations
and organizations. It also has institutional membership of some
educational associations.
Electronic Resources
The Internet abounds with varied educational resources. Electronic
versions of UNESCO's IIEP Newsletter or EFA 2000, for instance,
may be accessed on the Internet. Some publishers of academic journals
have provided access to electronic versions of their journals. Several
verified educational websites and links are shared with faculty
and researchers from time to time. The library is registered with
various international professional associations such as ASCD, NCTE,
NCTM, ATM, TESOL, for accessing their electronic resources.
Electronic Journals
The library has subscribed to 100 electronic journals through OCLC
Firstsearch. The service helps the library to provide access to
full text journal articles from selected journals by an authorization
and password. The access to electronic journals provides a gateway
to research.
