Principals as Instructional Leaders in Improving Classroom Teaching
The research focussed on two objectives: (i) To find out whether school principals are playing their role of instructional leaders or not; (ii) To create awareness among directors of education and principals about the role of school principals as instructional leaders. The research was conducted in 10 government high schools, five girls' schools and five boys' schools. Both quantitative and qualitative approach was used for data collection. Questionnaire was filled by teachers of 9th and 10th classes of Rawalpindi city. Interview was taken from the principals of the same schools. Samples included 50 teachers and 10 principals of the schools. The schools were selected through purposive sampling. The result of the questionnaire indicated that principals were playing their role of instructional leaders in improving classroom teaching. On the other hand, interviews indicate that principals are not playing their role of instructional leaders.
The findings of the reserach reveal that there is a contradiction between the results drawn from the questionnaire and the interviews. According to the teachers, the principals are playing the role of instructional leaders in improving classroom teaching. It is therefore concluded that the teachers tried not to displease their principals while talking about their role as instructional leaders.
