Quality in Education
Teaching and Leadership in Challenging Times
An International Conference at
Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan
February 21 - 23, 2006
Research and experience at Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED) and elsewhere has suggested that the quality of education is defined and determined by the larger social and political challenges in the context beyond the world of schools and classrooms. This raises important issues and questions for those who work to improve quality, such as:
- What is quality in education and who decides?
- What are local and global challenges to quality in education?
- What approaches, models, and strategies can be proposed to address these challenges?
These are significant questions particularly in the context of developing countries and require innovative thinking in identifying ways forward.
AKU-IED, through its Research and Policy Studies (RAPS) initiative (http://www.aku.edu/ied/raps/), proposes to conduct a series of conferences on the theme of quality in education. A major aim of these conferences will be to disseminate educational research and learning from the field experience of practitioners; debate issues of quality in education; and identify the key factors in the provision of quality education. The conferences will:
- Provide a platform for the dissemination of educational research and field experiences
- Enable discussion on issues of quality with reference to the conference themes
- Promote networking and enable contact among various stakeholders engaged in educational research
The first conference will specifically focus on the following themes:
- Quality in teacher education
- Leadership for quality teaching
- Globalisation, teaching & learning
Educational researchers and practitioners from around the world have contributed papers relevant to the conference theme.
