​Facilitation of research activities through interest groups stressed

​A round table discussion on 'action research'

​To provide a forum for discussions related to methods in educational research, AKU-IED has introduced a series of Roundtable Discussions (RTD). These discussions aim to guide faculty and students in conceptualising, designing and implementing research projects.

The first event of this initiative was held on February 18, 2014 focusing on “Action Research”. It aimed at conferring the essentials of action research and deliberate on its application in different disciplines, its ethics and its transformative agendas.

The participants of this discussion comprised of faculty, researchers and students from different academic departments of Aga Khan University. Following discussions were led by the faculty on the panel:

"Essentials of Action Research" - Dr Nelofer Halai, Professor, AKU-IED

"Educational Programmes and Action Research" - Dr Audrey Juma, Director, Notre Dame Institute of Education

"Participatory Action Research in Communities" - Dr Kausar S. Khan, Associate Professor, AKU Community Health Sciences

"Action Research in Health Sciences" - Dr Rozina Karmaliani, Professor, AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery

The speakers offered their rendition of transforming the nature of action research, its essentials and challenges faced by educational researchers due to their limited understanding of this particular methodology.

In conclusion, it was agreed that a 'Action Research Interest Group' should be established at AKU-IED and AKU-wide Qualitative Research Interest Group should be revived for ongoing engagement with methodological understandings in research.
