Worlds of the Indian Ocean

The Worlds of the Indian Ocean event was a combination of music festival, workshops and an academic conference held in Nairobi in February 2009. It brought together a wide range of specialists, entrepreneurs, artists and community leaders to link the past to the future of the Indian Ocean to the whole of Eastern Africa. Workshops covered Small & Medium Enterprise Development, experts in Museums and Archives, Sustainable Tourism. Musicians, artists, dancers and storytellers gathered from all over the western Indian Ocean in activities across the city of Nairobi. Funded mainly by Carmen Christensen, the key objectives of the conference and festival were:
- Exploring historical understandings and experiences of pluralism in region
- Listening to community leaders about the vitality of Indian Ocean histories, cultures and creativity throughout the region.
- Locate Indian Ocean conversations beyond the littoral states
- Interest and engage intellectuals, scholars and artists to work across boundaries in relation to the Indian Ocean zone’s past, present and future
