Academic Discussion Skills​ - B2

This course will focus on developing your academic discussion skills. The main aim of the course is to provide you with the language and skills needed to participate with greater confidence in different discussions. 

The course content will focus on the language used in taking part in discussions on academic topics. 

Your course tutor will provide feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your English and individual guidance on how you can improve further.

This course is aimed at students who have B2 level of English on the CEFR. The B2 level represents an  upper-intermediate standard of language proficiency. 

You will be expected to commit to studying six hours (4 hours face-to-face and 2 hours online learning) a week for four weeks.​

Academic Presentation Skills - B2

​This course will focus on developing your English speaking skills for Academic Presentations. The main aim of the course is to provide you with the language and skills needed to give presentations with greater confidence in academic settings. 

The course content will focus on the language and skills used in academic presentations.

Your course tutor will provide feedback on your performance throughout the course, and individual guidance on how you can improve further.

This course is aimed at students who have B2​ level of English on the CEFR. The B2 level represents an upper-intermediate standard of language proficiency.

Critical Reading (Online) - B2

This online course will focus on developing criticality in academic reading by raising your awareness of the importance of evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of texts, especially with regards to the evidence upon which arguments are made. It will help you consider your own attitudes toward reading, identify the writer’s purposes and opinions in their texts, and offer you the opportunity to practice reading a range of academic texts.

You will be expected to complete all the activities required on the course and keep up with the weekly schedule. 

This 18-hour online course is aimed at students with a B2 level of English who are required to read extensively for their academic programmes at AKU. You will be expected to commit to at least three hours of online study per week.

Engli​sh for the Media - B2​​​

This course will focus on developing your skills in using English for the Media. You will be exposed to and have the opportunity to practise elements of language that are essential for presenting and writing clear and accurate media-related  texts. 

The course will cover a wide range of media-related fields including newspapers, social media, radio and television. It will give you the opportunity to build the language skills needed to communicate ideas with clarity and accuracy, when speaking and writing.

This course is ideal for AKU students who want to develop their English language skills while learning about different aspects of media and communication.  It is aimed at students who have B2 (upper-intermediate) level of English.

This is a four-week blended course. You will be expected to commit to studying six hours (4 hours face-to-face and at least 2 hour online learning) a week for four weeks.​

This course focuses on developing academic reading skills. You will be familiarized with the basic concepts of surface reading and deep reading. Your course tutor will guide you through the reading process, speed reading, and the text struc​ture of common academic genres (namely textbooks and research articles).

This course is ideally suited for students at AKU who need support in developing their academic reading skills. It is aimed at students who have B1/B2 level of English.

You will be expected to commit to three hours’ study a week for three weeks. You will be able to complete the course content in your own time.

Integrating Academic Reading into Writing (Online) - B2

This Integrating Academic Reading into Writing course builds on the ELE_net Introduction to Academic Writing course. It is suitable for students who have completed this course and feel they need more support with academic reading and writing. The course is aimed at students with a B2 level in writing, and the main aim is to provide the language skills required to effectively read and integrate academic source materials into writing.

The course will focus on some of the key skills and language features that are essential in academic reading and writing. These include using sources, note-taking, paraphrasing, summarising, avoiding plagiarism, references, quotations, citations, and incorporating data. 

You will be expected to complete all the activities on the course and keep up with the weekly schedule. You will need to commit 18 hours to complete the course.

I​ELTS Advanced Speaking (Online) - B2/C1​​​​​

This online course is designed for AKU Students with a B2/C1 level of English who are aiming for an IELTS score o​f 6.5 or highe​r and need further support with the Speaking part of the test. 

IELTS Advanced Speaking focuses on helping you to develop the skills and language needed to achieve your IELTS goals. Each week you will have opportunities to practise and develop your speaking skills. You will receive feedback in group and one-to-one sessions. At the end of course, your tutor will indicate your strengths and weaknesses, your current level and provide recommendations for further improvement.

You will be expected to commit to three hours a week for six weeks. You will be able to complete the course in your own time. The course can be completed on any internet-enabled device, including smartphones and tablets.

IELTS Advanced Writing (Online) - B2 /C1​​​​​​​​

This course is designed for AKU Students with a B2/C1 level of English students who are aiming for an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher and need further support with the writing part of the test.

Each week of the course focuses on a different type of question you may face in the IELTS Academic or General Training writing tests.

You will look in detail at sample papers so you can see what is required to achieve a high 6.5-8.0 band score and receive guidance on how to write your answer.

You will also receive individual feedback on your writing from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.

IELTS Preparation (Online) - B1/C1

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognised language proficiency test. IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale to indicate your level of English proficiency. IELTS Preparation will prepare you to take the IELTS test for the first time, or improve your score if you have taken it previously. 

This online course shows you what you need to do to be successful in the IELTS test and how you are assessed by the examiners. Each week of the course focuses on a different part of the test - speaking, writing, reading and listening. 

You will also receive individual feedback from your course tutor, a trained IELTS examiner, who will indicate your current level and provide recommendations for improvement.
