Orthopaedics Residency Programme
This programme is recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan, for its FCPS Part II (Orthopaedics) Examination.
Objectives
The Orthopaedics Residency Programme at Aga Khan University is design ed for the education and training of physicians to produce competent and ethical practitioners of Orthopaedics who can meet the health care needs of the people of Pakistan and take up leadership role in Orthopaedics.
Duration of training
The Orthopaedic residency spans over a period of four years. This is in addition to two years of training in General Surgery as mandated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan.
Eligibility
- MBBS or equivalent degree approved by the PM&DC
- One year internship with six months in Medicine and allied and six months in Surgery and allied disciplines
- FCPS Part I
- Two years of General Surgery training as resident following FCPS I
The selection process is based purely on merit. Applications are invited from all over the country through advertisements in a number of national newspapers. The final selection is based on MCQ test scores and interviews.
Scope and content
Clinical training and didactic teaching
A comprehensive training is imparted through lectures and discussions, supervised training in outpatients, as well as participation in Emergency and Elective Surgery. Training encompasses all major areas of Orthopaedic Surgery such as trauma; hand, spine, paediatric and adult surgery; arthroscopy reconstructive and microsurgery brachial plexus, Orthopaedic oncology, the reconstruction in children and adults. Other special procedures offered are limb sparing surgery for musculoskeletal tumors, microvascular surgery, joint replacement surgery and surgery for correction of spinal deformities.
On-call duties
Each resident does an average of one night in four on-calls.
Positions available
There are three training positions in the department every year.
Career development
In coming year fellowships in hand and reconstructive microsurgery and Trauma are being planned.
Administrative set-up
The department consists of an Assistant Professor and Chief of Service, two associate Professors and three Assistant Professors and one Senior Instructor.
