Pain Management Fellowship Programme
Pain management, a subspecialty of anaesthesia, deals with the evaluation and treatment for variety of patients suffering from acute and chronic pain. The pain physician provides effective relief for all patients regardless of the source of the pain and its location. They use interventional pain management techniques to address difficult to solve pain problems with multidisciplinary team working closely together.
Department of Anaesthesia started pain management services with one pain physician in 1998. The department is pioneer in establishing Advance Pain Management Centre in Pakistan.
Considering the extra ordinary growth in pain management and shortage of trained pain physician in Pakistan, a pain fellowship training programme was put in place in year 2005. Currently there are six full time anaesthesia consultants with pain specialty offering training in both common and advanced interventional pain management modalities.
The purpose of the pain fellowship programme is to provide 12 months subspecialty level experience in the management of acute and chronic pain.
At the end of fellowship training we expect that:
- The fellow should have acquired the knowledge, skills, experience, judgment and attitude necessary to provide optimal care to patients with acute and chronic pain
- The fellow should be able to interpret complex diagnostic tool and be familiar with the therapeutic challenges encountered during chronic pain management
- The fellow should have acquired teaching, administrative and leadership skills, necessary for proficiency in clinical pain management and establishment of pain center
Our pain management service is extremely busy with variety of inpatient and outpatient acute and chronic painful syndromes. Educating physician is one of the primary goals of our fellowship programme. The programme is design ed in a way that training aspects are given equal attention through provision of protected time. The fellow is required to participate in all mandatory teaching session.
Pain fellowship offers the only programme of its kind in Pakistan. No other institution offer training in interventional pain management e.g. Radiofrequency and Neurolytic nerve block procedure.
Currently in Pakistan there is acute shortage of pain physician. Only two to three university hospitals offer pain management services and no pain fellowship training facilities are available in Pakistan. Considering the rising need for pain physicians, our graduates may lead many places to start or establish pain service.
