Plastic Surgery

This programme was initiated on November 1, 2003 and was recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan (CPSP) in 2004. The resident spends 6 months rotating in two other CPSP recognized hospitals in Karachi: Liaquat National Hospital (LNH) and Patel Hospital.


The overall goal of the programme is to turn out a keen, well-rounded young plastic surgeon able to deal with the challenges of the academic and clinical worlds. To achieve this, the resident would have an excellent grounding in all the disciplines of plastic surgery including cleft lip and palate, head and neck, microvascular and hand surgery, breast,  burn and aesthetic surgery. The resident would be in a position to sit and pass the Part II FCPS exam in plastic surgery of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan in his 4th year of Residency. 

Duration of Training 

This is a four-year-programme.


  • MBBS or equivalent degree approved by the PMDC
  • One year of internship with six months in medicine and allied and six months in Surgery and allied
  • FCPS Part I and two years in general surgery

The selection process entails a MCQ test and interview process.

Scope and Content

Clinical Training and Didactic Teaching

This is a well-thought, structured programme with the aim of providing the resident comprehensive exposure to all aspects of plastic surgery. The caseload at AKU offers almost all the disciplines of plastic surgery. There is regular interaction with allied fields such as Otolaryngology/ Head and Neck surgery, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and General/ Breast surgery. The time spent at LNH and Patel Hospital, besides providing good perspective, would offer excellent opportunity to enhance hands-on surgical skills development.  Weekly core curriculum sessions are held in collaboration with LNH and Patel Hospital. In addition, one session every week is dedicated to a journal club and one to developing skills in the AKU laboratory.

On Call Duties 

The resident is on call one in four nights.

Administrative Setup 

There is one full time Assistant Professor, Dr Fazl ur Rehman, who is the Programme Director. In addition, there is one Non full-time faculty Dr Tahir Shafi Khan. Dr Moiz Sadiq at LNH and Dr Mazhar Nizam at Patel Hospital are the programme directors at their respective institutions.
