Nephrology is the branch of medicine concerned with the care of patients with kidney disease and disorders of fluid and electrolyte metabolism.

The section of Nephrology at AKUH, Karachi has earned a reputation for excellence in outcomes-focused patient care.  The large number and variety of cases treated by the service is indicative of our ability to deliver comprehensive and quality health care.

The Nephrology Residency Programme at AKU was launched in 2006 to meet the needs of research, education, and patient care, in the field of Nephrology.

The Nephrology residency programme is structured to provide outstanding academic and clinical experience producing competent consultant nephrologists.  The programme is designed to provide opportunities including strong clinical training with an eye towards developing the comprehensive cognitive and procedural skills that are fundamental to nephrology.  In addition, in-depth training in applied and basic research to foster the trainee's development into an independent researcher in the areas of nephrology is provided.

The specific goals of the programme include formal instruction, clinical experience, and opportunities to acquire expertise in a wide variety of renal, hypertensive and fluid-electrolyte disorders.  They also include special experiences in various forms of Renal Replacement Therapies including Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation.

Much of the learning about disease, the acquisition of technical skills and acquisition of professional attitudes comes through the very close one-on-one supervised patient care during the clinical year.  Methods of evaluation, diagnosis, management and cost effectiveness are integral parts of the work done by the resident-faculty team.

Clinical experience in the field of dialysis, extracorporeal therapies and renal transplantation will entail supervised involvement in decision making for patients undergoing these therapies and during pre and post transplant care.  Clinical research is an integral part of the overall activities of the section of Nephrology.  The diverse clinical and research materials that are available at AKUH allow for clinical research in a variety of areas.  Trainees will be encouraged to avail this learning opportunity and pursue individual or collaborated longitudinal research projects during their training period.
