I​nternship Programme

The Internship Programme is a one-year training programme comprising six months in Medicine and Allied specialties and six months in Surgery and Allied specialties. 

Aim

The programme aims to provide quality exposure to each intern in the fields of medicine and surgery. The interns improve professional knowledge and acquire adequate hands-on experience and skills so that they become functional members of their teams which form the basic working and learning unit.

Objectives

By the end of one year rotation through various AKUH departments, interns should be able to:

  • function as caring physicians
  • assess common systemic conditions in both the elective and emergency settings
  • initiate appropriate initial management and seek appropriate advice
  • present cases in an analytical form and carry out adequate documentation related to patient care
  • perform common procedures independently (under supervision) in the elective and emergency setting
  • communicate effectively with patients and families as well as with members of the team of care-givers

Recognition of the Programme

The programme is recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC).  Recognition by universities in USA and UK is dependent on internal verification.

Evaluation

All interns are evaluated by  faculty members of their respective teams at the end of each rotation. Input is also taken from their chief/senior residents. A score is assigned for each component of the evaluation and a cumulative score is generated at the end of each year. Each intern’s final score is based on the continuous assessment ( 65 per cent), an annual exam (25 per cent) and attendance of academic lectures and workshops (10 per cent).  The intern scoring the highest is awarded the ‘Best Intern Award’ at the annual graduation ceremony. The next four interns on the merit list are also awarded special recognition certificates.

Appointment Contract

An intern’s appointment contract is for a period of one year. Candidates leaving the programme in the middle are  not be given any academic certificate. Only a service letter from the Human Resources department will be issued.

Salary Structure 

The salary of interns is Rs 27,000 per month.

Governance of the Internship Programme

The overall charge of all intern related activities rests with the Director and the Coordinator of the Internship Programme. The day-to-day issues are managed by the internship ommittee. This is headed by the internship director and has coordinators from the departments of Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynaecology and Family Medicine as its members. The departmental coordinators are responsible for the internship related issues in their specific departments. The current members of the internship committee are:
