Dean's Message

Message from the Dean, Medical College

Postgraduate Medical Education occupies an important position in the educational programmes of the Aga Khan University (AKU).

Currently, Aga Khan University offers a total of 52 postgraduate medical internship, residency and fellowship programmes whereas several new fellowship programmes will be launched from January 2013. We strive to provide a comprehensive clinical experience combined with rigorous academic programmes, including opportunities for research and scholarly activities. These structured programmes are supervised by Programme Directors and Coordinators committed to the development and enhancement of these programmes.  The programmes are directed towards eligibility for the specialty examinations of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Pakistan.

PGME has graduated over 2000 physicians. Over 25% of clinical faculty at AKU is graduates of AKU’s PGME programmes.  It is expected that many future academic leaders for the teaching institutions of the country will be among the graduates. Many graduates are serving as faculty and staff of teaching institutions in various provinces.  AKU’s PGME programme is undergoing internationalization and has established residency training programmes in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Radiology and Family Medicine in East Africa as well as residency programmes in Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery in Kabul Afghanistan. PGME graduates working in the country are contributing to health care as skilled generalists, specialists and teachers in cities and in remote areas such as Kunri in Sindh, and Gilgit and Chitral in the northern region of Pakistan. We expect that they will contribute to improve standards of health care and be leaders in their clinical disciplines.

A system of regular internal and external review of programmes is in place to ensure continuous improvement and maintenance of appropriate educational content.  AKU strives for international high quality and excellence in all of its PGME programmes and relies on its national / international partner institutions to maintain benchmark standards.

We welcome applications for our postgraduate programmes from suitably qualified individuals from within Pakistan and abroad.  We assure that they will have a lifetime experience of learning and development.
